Popular Cosmetic Procedures for Moms

Pregnancy changes your body in ways that diet and exercise alone cannot always fix. Loose skin, deflated breasts, and stubborn belly fat are common after having children  and they are nothing to be ashamed of. Many moms reach a point where they feel great on the inside but want their outside to match. That is where cosmetic procedures for moms come in. Dr. John J. Corey, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Scottsdale, Arizona, with over 30 years of experience, shares the most popular options that are helping moms feel like themselves again.

What Pregnancy Does to Mom Body?

You grew a human being. That is remarkable. But let’s be real  pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding leave a mark. Stretched skin, deflated breasts, stubborn belly fat that won’t budge no matter how clean you eat or how often you go to the gym. These changes are not a sign that you did anything wrong. They are simply what happens when your body does something extraordinary.

Many moms reach a point where they feel healthy and strong on the inside, but their body no longer reflects that on the outside. That gap  between how you feel and how you look  is exactly why cosmetic procedures for moms have become so popular.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), over 325,000 mommy makeover procedures were performed on women aged 20 to 39 in a single year. And in a survey, 62% of moms said they would consider a cosmetic procedure if cost were not a concern. You are not alone in feeling this way, and you are not vain for wanting to feel like yourself again.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 30 years of experience in Scottsdale, Arizona, I have helped hundreds of moms restore their confidence through safe, personalized procedures. This guide will walk you through the most popular options, what each one involves, and how to know if it might be right for you.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

Before we get into individual procedures, it helps to understand what a mommy makeover actually is  because it is not one single surgery.

A mommy makeover is a customized combination of procedures done in one surgery to address the most common post-pregnancy concerns at the same time. The most typical combination includes a breast procedure (augmentation or lift), a tummy tuck, and liposuction. But every mom’s body is different, and every plan we create together is tailored to your specific goals.

The biggest benefit of combining procedures is that you only go through one recovery. Moms are busy. Taking two weeks off from your kids and your life once is far easier than doing it twice or three times.

The Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures for Moms

1. Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

If there is one procedure that moms ask about more than any other, it is the tummy tuck. And for good reason.

During pregnancy, your abdominal muscles stretch and sometimes separate — a condition called diastasis recti. No amount of exercise will close that gap on its own. The skin also stretches significantly, and once it loses elasticity, it does not fully bounce back. This is especially true after multiple pregnancies or after having larger babies.

A tummy tuck removes the loose, extra skin from your lower abdomen and repairs those separated muscles underneath. The result is a flatter, firmer belly  not just on the surface, but in the deeper muscle layer too. Most patients notice they stand taller and feel stronger in their core after this procedure.

According to the ASPS, tummy tucks have increased by 85% over the past two decades. In 2024, over 171,000 tummy tuck procedures were performed in the United States and a large portion of those were moms. The incision is placed low, typically below the bikini line, so it can be hidden under swimwear and underwear.

Good candidate if: You are done having children, are at or near a stable weight, and have loose abdominal skin or muscle separation that has not responded to diet and exercise.

Recovery: Most patients take about 2 weeks off before returning to light activities, with full recovery in 4 to 6 weeks.

2. Breast Augmentation

Breastfeeding is one of the most beautiful things you can do for your baby. It is also one of the most common reasons moms come to see me.

After breastfeeding, many women are left with breasts that feel deflated or smaller than they were before pregnancy. The volume simply does not come back on its own. Breast augmentation placing saline or silicone implants  restores that volume and brings back the breast fullness and shape you once had.

Modern implants have come a long way. The trend in 2024, according to the ASPS, has shifted toward smaller, more natural-looking implants that enhance proportion without looking overdone. Most moms are not looking to go dramatically bigger. They want to look like a slightly better version of themselves and that is exactly what we aim for.

The surgery typically takes about one to two hours, and most patients return to light activities within a week. You will need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for about four to six weeks.

Good candidate if: You have noticed significant volume loss in your breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding and want to restore fullness in a natural-looking way.

Recovery: 1 week before returning to desk work, 4 to 6 weeks before returning to exercise.

3. Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Volume loss is one thing. Sagging is another and sometimes both happen at the same time.

A breast lift, or mastopexy, repositions the breast tissue and nipple higher on the chest wall. It removes excess stretched skin and reshapes the breast so it sits in a more youthful, perky position. No implant is required for this procedure, though many moms choose to combine a lift with augmentation to address both sagging and volume loss at the same time.

According to ASPS data, patients in their 30s receive 26% of all breast lifts performed each year , the largest group by age. This makes perfect sense, as the combination of pregnancy, breastfeeding, and the natural effects of gravity tend to show up most dramatically in this decade.

At my practice, I use what is often called the Brazilian mastopexy technique an approach I refined during advanced cosmetic surgery training in Brazil. It focuses on natural breast shape and beautiful, long-lasting results with minimal visible scarring.

Good candidate if: Your breasts have lost their position and appear to sag, with nipples pointing downward or falling below the crease of the breast.

Recovery: 1 to 2 weeks for basic activities, 4 to 6 weeks for full exercise clearance.

4. Liposuction

Here is something a lot of people do not know: liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It is a body contouring procedure. There is a big difference.

Liposuction removes small, stubborn pockets of fat in specific areas  the abdomen, hips, outer thighs, inner thighs, flanks (love handles), and arms are the most common. These are the spots where fat likes to settle during and after pregnancy and simply refuses to leave, even when you are eating well and exercising regularly.

Liposuction is the single most performed cosmetic surgery in the United States. In 2024, over 306,000 liposuction procedures were performed ,1% increase from the year before. Women aged 40 to 54 receive 45% of all liposuction procedures each year, making it especially popular among moms who have finished having children and are focused on body refinement.

I often use liposuction alongside other procedures like a tummy tuck or breast surgery to help sculpt a more complete result. The difference it makes in the curve of the waist and hips is dramatic when you compare before and after.

Good candidate if: You are at or near your ideal weight but have specific areas of stubborn fat that have not responded to diet and exercise.

Recovery: Most patients return to work within 1 week and to exercise within 3 to 4 weeks. Compression garments are worn for several weeks to support healing.

5. Breast Implant Revision

If you had breast augmentation years before having children, pregnancy and breastfeeding may have changed how your implants look and feel. Some women also find that implants they loved at 25 no longer feel right at 40.

Breast implant revision is a procedure that updates, repositions, or replaces existing implants. It can also address complications like capsular contracture  when scar tissue around the implant tightens and causes firmness or discomfort. Many of my patients are surprised by how simple the procedure can be and how much better they feel afterward.

Good candidate if: You have older implants that no longer look or feel the way they did, or if you have noticed changes in shape, position, or firmness.

Recovery: Similar to the original augmentation 1 week for light activity, 4 to 6 weeks for full recovery.

Combining Procedures: Why Most Moms Choose a Full Makeover

One of the most common questions I get is whether to do everything at once or space procedures out over time.

For most moms, doing everything in one surgery makes more sense. You go through anesthesia once, recover once, and see your full results at the same time. Arranging childcare for one two-week period is far easier than doing it two or three times.

That said, not every mom is a candidate for combining multiple procedures. Your health, your goals, and the complexity of each procedure all factor into what is safe and realistic for your situation. That is exactly what a consultation is for.

When Is the Right Time to Consider a Procedure?

Timing matters. Here are the most important things to consider before moving forward:

You should be done having children. A tummy tuck repairs and tightens muscles and skin that would be stretched again by another pregnancy. It is not that you cannot get pregnant after a tummy tuck  it is that a future pregnancy would likely undo the results. The same is true for a breast lift or augmentation, which can be affected by future breastfeeding.

Your weight should be stable. We recommend being within 10 to 15 pounds of your ideal weight before surgery. Significant weight gain or loss after a procedure can affect your results.

You should be done breastfeeding. Wait at least three to six months after you stop breastfeeding before considering any breast procedure. Your breast tissue needs time to settle before surgery.

You should be in good general health. Smoking increases your risk of complications significantly. If you smoke, you will need to stop at least six weeks before surgery. This is not a suggestion  it directly affects how well you heal.

What Recovery Really Looks Like

Let me be honest with you: recovery takes time, and you will need help. This is not the kind of thing where you can go home, put the kids to bed, and wake up ready for the school run the next morning.

For the first one to two weeks after a mommy makeover, you will need someone to help with childcare, cooking, and basic tasks around the house. You will be sore. You will be tired. And that is completely normal ,your body is healing.

By week three, most patients are moving around comfortably and handling light activities. By weeks four to six, you can gradually return to exercise. Most patients see their final results around three to six months after surgery, once the swelling has fully settled.

The key is planning ahead. Arrange help early, prepare your recovery space, fill your prescriptions before the procedure, and give yourself permission to rest. The moms who recover best are the ones who let themselves be taken care of for a little while.

Is It Safe?

Yes ,when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited facility.

I am board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and have been practicing in Arizona since 1993. Every procedure at my practice is performed in an accredited surgical facility that meets strict safety standards for equipment, staff, and emergency protocols.

The complication rate for cosmetic procedures performed in accredited outpatient facilities by board-certified surgeons is very low , the ASPS reports a serious complication rate of less than half of one percent. Choosing the right surgeon and the right facility is the most important safety decision you will make.

A Word About Realistic Expectations

Cosmetic surgery can do a lot. It can tighten loose skin, restore volume, remove stubborn fat, and repair separated muscles. What it cannot do is make you look like a completely different person, turn back the clock by 20 years, or substitute for a healthy lifestyle.

The moms who are happiest with their results come in with clear, realistic goals. They are not trying to look like someone else. They want to look like the best version of themselves  and that is a goal I can genuinely help with.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.How long do I need to wait after pregnancy before getting a mommy makeover?

Most surgeons recommend waiting at least six months after delivery and three to six months after you stop breastfeeding. This gives your body time to stabilize before surgery.

2.Will my results last forever?

The results of a tummy tuck are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight and do not have more children. Breast results can change with significant weight fluctuations or aging over time. Living a healthy lifestyle helps maintain your outcome.

3.Can I have more children after a mommy makeover?

Yes, but it is not ideal. A future pregnancy can reverse many of the results, particularly from a tummy tuck and breast procedures. We strongly recommend completing your family before moving forward.

4.How much does a mommy makeover cost?

Cost varies depending on which procedures are combined. Dr. Corey’s practice offers financing through Prosper Healthcare Lending for patients who qualify.

5.Does Dr. Corey only treat women from Scottsdale?

No. Many patients travel specifically to see Dr. Corey from across Arizona and beyond. The practice can assist with guidance for out-of-town patients.
