Dr. Thao completed his undergraduate degree at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed his general surgery residency at St. John Hospital in Detroit, MI and received further training in plastic surgery in Akron, OH.

Dr. Thao is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, an elite group of surgeons dedicated to the highest standards of patient care and surgical excellence.

Dr. Thao performs cosmetic and reconstructive surgery procedures in Minnesota. His professional areas of expertise are in cosmetic surgery; particularly facial rejuvenation, body contouring, breast surgery, aesthetic lasers, and anti-aging injections such as botox and dermal fillers. He uses advanced techniques in breast augmentation, short scar breast reduction, breast lift, and endoscopic brow lift. Dr. Thao is experienced in body contouring for massive weight-loss patients and performs tummy tuck, liposuction, and total body lifts.  He also performs Mommy Makeovers to help moms regain their shape and is one of the most requested plastic surgeon in the United States for Asian cosmetic surgery particularly for Asian double eyelid.

He also has experience with craniofacial trauma such as facial fractures and is trained in other general plastic and reconstructive procedures including wound care and flap reconstruction, treatments for skin cancer, carpal tunnel syndrome, and trigger finger surgery.
